Cat and Teeth Clean

Dental care is one of the most overlooked aspects of pet health, yet it’s just as important as feeding a balanced diet or regular exercise. At Snowy Veterinary Centre in Medway, we know that dental disease is one of the most common issues seen in cats and dogs-particularly as they age.

By learning how to brush your pet’s teeth at home, you can prevent painful dental problems, reduce the need for anaesthetic dental procedures, and help your pet live a healthier, happier life.

Why Brushing Your Pet’s Teeth Is So Important

Research shows that over 80% of dogs and 70% of cats develop some form of dental disease by the age of three. Dental disease, also known as periodontal disease, occurs when plaque builds up on the teeth. Over time, plaque hardens into tartar, leading to inflammation of the gums, tooth decay, and infections that can spread to other organs such as the heart, liver, and kidneys.

Common signs of dental problems in pets include:

  • Bad breath (halitosis)
  • Red or bleeding gums
  • Loose or discoloured teeth
  • Drooling, difficulty eating, or pawing at the mouth
  • Reduced appetite or change in behaviour

Regular tooth brushing is the best way to keep your pet’s mouth clean and prevent these issues from developing.

Step 1: Get Your Pet Comfortable with Touch

Before introducing any toothbrush or toothpaste, start by building positive associations with touch. Choose a calm moment at home and gently stroke your pet in areas they already enjoy, such as their head, cheeks, or under the chin.

Over a few days, gradually increase the duration of petting and slowly move toward their muzzle. The goal is to help your pet feel relaxed about being handled near their face. Always keep sessions short and rewarding. If your cat or dog shows signs of discomfort-like pulling away or walking off-don’t force them. Take a break and try again another time.

Step 2: Introduce the Toothbrush and Toothpaste

Once your pet is comfortable with gentle touch, it’s time to introduce the dental tools. Always use pet-specific toothbrushes-these are softer and shaped to fit an animal’s mouth-and pet-safe toothpaste, which comes in flavours pets actually enjoy (like chicken or beef). Human toothpaste should never be used, as it contains ingredients that are toxic to animals.

For cats, leave the toothbrush and toothpaste somewhere they can explore. Let them sniff or lick the toothpaste to build familiarity. For dogs, show them the toothbrush, and allow them to taste a pea-sized amount of toothpaste.

Repeat your touch training, but this time, hold the toothbrush as you move your hand toward their mouth. Let your pet associate it with calm, positive experiences.

Step 3: Begin Brushing Your Pet’s Teeth

Once your pet accepts having their mouth touched, start gently brushing their teeth. Lift their lip and use small circular motions, focusing on the outer surfaces where plaque tends to accumulate most. You only need to brush for a few seconds at first. End on a positive note, with reassurance or a small treat, even if you only brushed one or two teeth.

How Often Should You Brush?

Ideally, pets benefit most from daily tooth brushing, but even two to three times per week can make a noticeable difference. Consistency is key. When combined with dental-friendly chews, toys, or specially formulated dental diets and dental products, regular brushing can significantly reduce plaque buildup. Ideally look for Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC) approved products which have been shown to help reduce plaque and tartar formation in dogs and cats.

Annual Pet Dental Checks

Despite great at-home care, dental issues can still arise, especially as pets get older. That’s why it’s important to schedule a dental check once a year. During a dental examination, your vet will check for early signs of plaque, tartar, gum inflammation, or oral pain that you might not notice at home.

At Snowy Veterinary Centre, our experienced team provides thorough cat and dog dental checks in Medway. We use gentle handling and modern equipment to ensure your pet’s comfort and safety at every stage.
